1st graders looked at the artwork of Andy Goldsworthy and how he makes art using nature. We had a great day working with shells, leaves and sticks to make our own art using nature. (It was really cold outside, otherwise we would have done it outside;)

This week in art, we focused on 2 different artists. We started off looking at Jasper Johns and his paintings inspired by everyday things. We also looked at artwork made by Louise Nevelson. She creates large box installations from objects or materials she finds. She makes her work by combining many ordinary or everyday things. After putting all the different pieces together, she unifies the work with one color of paint. 5th graders will use found materials from the art room to create their own art inspired by Jasper Johns and Louise Nevelson. We started with concentric circles similar to Jasper Johns' painting of the target. Then we will glue different found objects on old CDs. Later, we will use paint and foil to show the style of each of the artists.
In 4th grade art, we have been looking at art inspired by beliefs. We looked at Christian art this week. We saw how many churches have beautiful stained glass windows with pictures or designs with color. They started creating their own stained glass window with black paper and colored tissue paper.
3rd graders have looked at how we can express ourselves with our faces. We practiced drawing our classmates with different facial expressions and made a paper cut face with an expression. We are also creating a background using watercolor paint with salt and clear wrap. We created a background with warm colors and one with cool colors. Can you feel the difference?
2nd graders are using their imaginations to create a new world as they step out of the subway. Check out these amazing places! 1st graders have worked with patterns to create artwork inspired by Gustav Klimt. They chose one special person to include in their artwork. When students were finished, they experimented with watercolor to create patterns from animals and nature.
We have continued with shapes to make a symmetrical ink painting. Students used tracing paper and a smaller design to repeat on their bigger paper. They are using India ink to paint their shapes and create a strong contrast.
We have continued to think about beliefs in our artwork. Students finished a pie piece with color for their mandala. They were put together to make a collaborative mandala inspired by what each student values. We also looked at Islamic artwork and how they use lines and patterns to create their religious artwork.
3rd graders have designed and colored their own tennis shoes in collaboration with their activities in P.E. class. We looked at some great shoe designs and made our own.
2nd graders were inspired by the book, The Sound of Colors, by Jimmy Liao. In this book, a girl loses her eyesight and goes about her day using her other senses and imagination. We are working on our own illustrations of what we imagine when we come out of the subway.
