5th grade students are thinking about how we as artists can create art that represents who we are. We started by creating a clay symbol that represents how we feel about this 5th grade year. Then we looked at some famous artists and their self-portraits. Students noticed that this is how people did 'selfies' in the old days. These self-portraits represent who the artist is and their style of art. Students got to practice drawing a portrait and learned how to draw with the correct proportions. Now we are working with clay to make a fun face mug that represents who we are. Students just started making a pinch pot and adding a coil to make it taller.

4th graders learned about how Asian artists use ink and water to create some of their beautiful landscape paintings. Students practiced with the ink and then created their own landscape inspired by images of Asian ink painting. We worked on showing different values of ink--darker ink in the foreground and lighter ink in the background.
3rd graders are learning how art can reflect (show) and preserve (keep) culture. The 1st culture we learned about is Mexican culture. We looked at some images and symbols that represent Mexico. Students drew some designs with Mexican symbols and then pushed the design into a metal piece. This is called metal-tooling. Students used bright colors to color in some of the symbols and parts of the design.
2nd graders are learning how we can print in different ways. Students drew and pushed a design into a piece of foam to make a relief print. The parts that are pushed in stay white, and the other parts have the ink color rolled on them. Prints are fun because we can make many of the same design.
1st graders loved choosing a mask and painting & decorating it creatively. We learned how masks can hide, protect or just cover all or part of our face. Students added feathers, glitter and gems to make their masks more festive. Enjoy!
