The kindergartners enjoyed adding fun and creative designs to their cat heads to make them look a little abstract. When we make something abstract, it is not realistic like what a real cat would look like.

1st graders have enjoyed learning about Australia and their unique dot painting. We looked at different aboriginal cave paintings and how that developed into the dot paintings. Students practiced with symbols and dots and now are creating a large dot painting using their hand and other symbols. The more dots, the better!
In second grade art we have been focusing on how music can inspire us to be creative. Students listened to classical music and painted in the style of Wassily Kandinsky. We also learned about the artist Stuart Davis and his paintings with layers of color and shapes. Students cut out colored paper and layered it to make their own collage. We also listened to jazz music when creating this artwork.
We have been learning about art made by different groups of people. Art can reflect (show) and preserve (keep) culture. We learned about Indonesia and students drew on cloth with crayons to make a batik design. We placed the cloth in a dye bath to give it color. Students created a pattern or nature design on the cloth. We recently learned about the Kuna Indian people and their mola cloth designs. Many women create these for clothing and blankets. This type of art has many layers of colored cloth. We created something similar with felt and animal images.
We learned about India and the special Indian elephants. Students built an elephant body by using 2 pinch pots. Then we added flat circle pieces of clay for the head and ears. We rolled the clay into 4 short coils to make the legs. After that, students added other fun detail to make the elephants unique and special. We will be painting the elephants this week!
5th graders are glazing their clay face mugs. We are excited to see what the color will look like once they are fired in the kiln!
