Kindergartners are learning how they can change paper in creative ways. We looked at the artist Henri Matisse and his creative paper art. Students started cutting out big shapes so they could layer paper like Henri Matisse. We will work on cutting out smaller shapes and learn how to fold paper to make symmetrical shapes next week.

1st graders are working to create different types of lines. We used all types of different materials to make lines on our papers.
The 2nd grade clay Picasso faces were fired in the kiln last week. We will paint them with fun colors soon. We are now learning about another influential artist, Walt Disney. Walt Disney also showed creativity in his animations and later in life with his creation of Disneyland. He was a risk-taker like Picasso because he tried new things that were difficult and had not been done before. Students are designing their own creative theme parks.
3rd graders finished painting their Iowa landscapes on the paper plate. This week, we used a template to make the tree notches on the plate. Students then warped the paper plate loom to get the shape of a tree. We will begin weaving some different colors for the leaves during our next art class.
4th graders are learning how different people express their beliefs and values in art. We looked at Islamic art and how much of it is made with interesting designs and patterns. Students practiced these designs and then drew some on a bigger paper. We traced over all lines with crayons and oil pastels. Then, students painted over the areas with beautiful watercolor paint. The watercolor and crayon don't mix so you can still see the lines and patterns.
The 5th graders are still working with simple shapes and lines to create interesting artworks. We folded tracing paper in half to make a triangle and drew lines and shapes in that space. Then we drew those same lines on the other side. When it opens up, we have a symmetrical design! After that we pushed the lines into the foam and went over each line deeper so we can make a good print. This week we will start printing with different colored ink! We will make a print that shows radial symmetry because the design will go around the center point.
In 5th grade art, we are looking at how we can use shapes in creative ways to make our art. We are using the principles of design. Our 1st artwork worked with contrast and balance. Students tried to make an artwork that can be seen as 2 things. What do you see? For our 2nd artwork, we looked at the yin-yang symbol and Japanese Notan principle. Students cut and flipped the black shapes to create balance, contrast and a variety of shapes.
In 4th grade art, we are looking at how we can express our beliefs and values in our artwork. We started with images of things that are important to us. Then we drew and colored a mandala piece that has many symbols that represent who we are.
3rd grade artists have worked with nature. We created a nature book and drew many different things from nature. Students are painting an Iowa landscape on a paper plate so we can make a tree weaving. We looked at the artist Grant Wood and his Iowa landscapes.
In 2nd grade art we are inspired by Pablo Picasso and his broken up faces. He is well-known as a Cubist artist and showed creativity in making art in a new and unique way. Students cut out a face shape from clay and are making facial features. They are being creative by placing the facial features in different places.
