Students finished adding some details to their textured butterflies. They learned how to make a slab for the wings, a coil for the body and small spheres for the eyes. It was a lot of fun working with clay. Now the butterflies need to dry so we can paint them and attach a hanger. We also made little turkeys for Thanksgiving using coffee filters and clothespins. It was fun to try and splatter paint to make the turkey feathers.

1st graders are learning how we can connect art with many other parts of our life. We will be connecting art with nature, science, music, movement and telling stories. We had a really fun day working with things from nature. The artist Andy Goldsworthy creates amazing art just using things from nature. Here are some examples of his work. Students really enjoyed working like him by creating their own designs using nature items. Enjoy the slideshow and students working together! In 2nd grade art, we read a book called When Sophie's Feelings are Really, Really Hurt. We talked about how she was trying to show how she felt about her favorite tree by the way she chose colors to paint it. She painted the tree with bright colors to show how it made her happy. Students drew and colored their own 'emotion' tree by creating different colored branches to represent different emotions. Students earned a special art day so we made special Chinese paper lanterns as a reward. We used texture plates to color it and then attached all the pieces together. It was a bit tricky to get everything together, but students worked on patience in waiting for help!
In 3rd grade art, we have been discussing and creating art with different facial expressions. Students are learning how to use an X-acto knife to cut paper. They also learned a few new ways to work with watercolor paper. We used salt and clear wrap on wet watercolor paint to create some fun effects. Each student painted a warm and cool color watercolor painting for the background. Here is some of the work in progress and an example of the final work students are creating.
Students are still working on their paper cut lanterns. Some are still cutting, while others are gluing tissue paper on the back side. A few students are finished and rolled the paper together to make their finished lantern. In the coming weeks, we will try all the lanterns with tea candles. Students are really excited for this!
5th graders are learning about another style of abstract art, color field painting. This style has art with simple expression, no movement or action, analogous colors and is very two-dimensional or flat. We looked at some examples and students are making the two types of color field painting- hard and soft edge. We just started working on some simple ideas using oil and chalk pastels. Here are some examples of hard-edge color field painting.
We had an awesome art class last Wednesday. Students looked at some short videos of Jackson Pollock and his painting style. He drips, throws and splatters paint to make his large action paintings. Each 5th grader got to do this with a paper on the floor. Many students said this was their favorite art class ever!
In 4th grade art, we havne been learning about how we can express our beliefs and values in our artwork. We are focusing on Christian art and how much of this art shows stories from the Bible. Each student made a small sketch of a Bible story and then transferred that idea to a black paper. Students are using Xacto knives to cut out the shapes so that the paper can go around a jar with a candle, making it a lantern.
In 3rd grade art we are starting a unit focusing on how we can express ourselves in different ways. Students were models and drew each others' facial expressions.
2nd graders finished painting the clay portraits. Each student chose at least 4 different fun colors to paint the different parts of the face.
