5th grade artists used simple lines and shapes to create a radial print design. By repeating the design around the center point, they are creating radial symmetry balance and repetition. Here are a few examples from our first day of printing!

5th grade artists started the year learning about a contemporary artist, Jen Stark. Jen Stark is a 35 year old artist from Florida who now lives and works in California. She creates really beautiful layered art using lots of bright colors. Students created their own layered paper design by starting with a folded paper and shape they cut out. They used popsicle sticks to create depth and make the paper stick out more similar to Jen Stark.
4th grade artists had a special visitor to their art class. We have been learning about how art expresses our beliefs and values. Students created a mandala piece with special symbols that represent them. Our visitor talked about kaleidoscopes and brought in her collection to show us the beautiful designs on the outside and inside. Kaleidoscopes are similar to mandalas because the design rotates around the center point or circle. Students are creating their own kaleidoscope design using colored paper and layering it.
Third grade artists have been painting an Iowa landscape on a thick paper plate. We will use the paper plate to create a tree weaving on. Students learned about depth in a landscape and the 3 different parts of a landscape: foreground, middle ground and background. Here are 2 examples of the landscape painting. We will add the tree weaving this next week.
2nd grade artists learned about the famous artist Pablo Picasso. Picasso's art changed so much over time and he was a risk-taker in trying new ways of making art. The 2nd grade artists used clay to create a portrait similar to how Picasso did later in his life. He moved face parts around and made the face look pretty strange and silly. 1st graders are learning about lines in art. We learned that a line starts as a dot and keeps moving. Here are some fun 'blown' lines. It was lots of fun making all the different lines with different materials!
1st graders did a great job using lots of circles to make this fun tree. We looked at artwork by Wassily Kandinsky. He has a painting of concentric circles using many different colors. Students first printed circles all over the background with bottle lids, then traced and cut out their hand for the tree, and finally they traced and cut out large, medium and small circles to make the leaves.
In kindergarten art, students are learning different ways to change paper. We started by making a paper playground or amusement park together. Then each student drew and colored their face and attached some crazy, fun hair. Can you see which child is yours? |
