2nd graders are creating totem poles with animals that represent their family. We looked at different examples of totem poles and learned that most are family symbols. Students looked at animal examples and chose their own animals to represent their families. We are adding clay to create the animal faces now.
The 4th graders finished decorating their Greek pots with many patterns. We just started a unit learning about weaving. Students made their own cardboard loom and are learning how to warp the loom and weave around to create a small bag.
The 5th grade class is working as groups to re-create a famous artwork. We looked at artwork by Keith Haring, Gustav Klimt, Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol. Students got to choose which artwork they wanted to do as a group. Check out the works in progress! Most of the 5th graders are finished with their drawings inspired by Guiseppe Arcimboldo. Many were very creative in transforming the objects inside their subject matter. 4th graders practiced with different Greek designs and patterns and started drawing their designs on their Greek pots! Students can either choose just geometric pattern designs or show people doing something (like the Greek story-telling pottery). Below are the works in progress.
The third grade classes are learning about how different people from different places create artwork that shows their culture. The first one we looked at was Mexican art and symbols. Each student chose some Mexican symbols to draw for their design on a copper piece.
The 2nd graders had a great time building their own instrument inspired by Mongolian rattles. This whole unit we have focused on how music can inspire us to be creative. The kids can't wait to take their rattles home! 1st graders have looked at 5 different cultures and some symbols that represent them. We looked at Japan, Haiti, Australia, South Africa and the United States. Students will add dots to their symbols and background this coming week in the style of Australian dot painters.
