5th graders looked at the artist Guiseppe Arcimboldo and how he uses ordinary food, flowers and other objects to make creative portraits. 5th graders have chosen their own subject matter and objects to transform inside their subjects. Here is a student example from an art book written by Ken Vieth.

The 4th graders are learning about Ancient Greece and looking at some of their clay pots. We are making a Greek inspired pot in art class.
3rd graders painted their creative clay sculptures last week. They also were able to finish their junk art sculptures. The junk art sculptures will be on display at the Elementary Extravaganza on Thursday, February 5th. 2nd graders have been looking at 2 different artists who are inspired by music when making their artwork. We looked at Wassily Kandinsky and Stuart Davis. Kandinsky was inspired by classical music and Stuart Davis by jazz music. Both of these artists lived during different time periods when this music was popular. Here is some work by both artists. Students painted while listening to classical music and cut shapes to create many overlapping colors and shapes while listening to jazz music.
1st graders are learning about art from Australia and how it started a long time ago. They each did their own cave painting using sticks. Students found that painting with sticks wasn't very easy to do. We will be looking at more Australian art and making dot paintings similar to those made in Australia.
