Kindergarten artists really enjoyed learning about the Russian nesting dolls and how they stack inside of each other. Students created their own art inspired by the Russian nesting dolls by drawing each member of their family on a different size of paper. We have talked about how all our families are different and special to us. Here are a few examples of the student work.

1st grade artists were so excited to create celebration masks. We learned that masks can hide, protect or cover all or part of a face. Students used paint, gems, glitter and feathers to make their mask unique.
The 2nd grade class had a great time working with the artist Piet Mondrian to create Minecraft characters. Students first learned how to make a monotype print by painting on a piece of plastic. After painting the lines and shapes, they pressed a paper into the paint to make a print. We learned that Piet Mondrian uses primary colors (red, blue & yellow) and rectangles or squares.
In 3rd grade art, students are learning how people from different cultures and places make art that reflects and preserves their culture. The 1st culture we are focusing on is Mexican culture. Students investigated symbols used in Mexican culture and created their own design using those symbols. We pushed the design into a soft piece of metal and colored it with bright colors.
The 5th grade class just finished their creative animal drawings. We were inspired by the sharpie art of Cheeming Boey. Students also painted a monochromatic background using one color plus black and white.
5th graders are using 2 artists as inspiration for this project: Guiseppe Arcimboldo and Cheeming Boey. Boey is an artist from Malaysia who started drawing with sharpie on white coffee cups. Students are using the inspiration of Guiseppe Arcimboldo to help them combine lots of different lines and patterns into a specific subject. Arcimboldo used ordinary things to fill portraits and make them extraordinary. Students have been drawing animals, birds or insects. After drawing the subject large, they are filling it with creative lines and patterns using sharpie markers.
4th graders have finished painting their clay relief symbols. Students learned that a clay relief has some parts sticking out and some parts lower. Students carved and added clay to create the clay relief. They also chose symbols that represent their life, beliefs and interests.
3rd graders will be investigating different cultures and their unique artwork. We are starting with Mexican art. Students noticed that the artists use animals and everyday things as well as bright colors. We will be making a metal tooling artwork using symbols or Mexico. Here is one student's practice drawing before we trace it into the metal and color with bright markers.
1st graders are creating their own celebration mask! Students discussed the reasons why we might wear a mask and looked at some different masks from other countries. 3 reasons why masks are worn: to hide (identity), to protect (sports or medicine) or to just cover your face. We are painting the masks now. After that, we will add glitter, gems and feathers to make a unique celebration mask!
