In art foundations, we finished the semester with 2 projects. One focused on rhythm and movement. She decided to draw dancers in 3 different poses. We worked a lot with proportion to make the body look realistic. The final project was inspired by the art of Rene Magritte. He works with surprise and makes you question his paintings. For this unit, we looked at some big themes in our lives and the meaning of them to us and the world. This student chose to represent how the world views beauty. We discussed how our meaning of beauty can and often is different than what the media is telling us is beautiful. For her final artwork, she chose the theme of change. She wanted to represent how she has changed in the experience of living in Iowa for this year as a foreign exchange student. She is heading home, but she is different and has grown and changed.

In high school painting, we looked at the art of Piet Mondrian and how it changed over time. He started by painting realistic places and flowers. Later, he was influenced by the Cubist artists and started breaking apart his subject matter. He finally made a very simple shapes and colors in his paintings. He is well-known for this new and unique type of abstract art. Students created their own abstract art design on a pre-made ceramic vase. We worked on craftsmanship for this simple style of abstract art. Students worked with space to create a colored pencil drawing. We learned how to create depth with size, value, placement and detail to help us with these drawings. Enjoy the fun, exaggerated color as well! Students are also working with variety to create some interesting artwork. This student filled an animal drawing with a variety of patterns. We are also making record bowls with radial symmetry patterns.
For this special painting, students took photos of special places where they live and chose one to create as a painting. Our goal was to represent the world around us. We visited the artist Danielle Clouse Gast as inspiration. She paints many places in this area around the lakes and in the countryside. We also learned more about landscapes and art by Grant Wood, another Iowan artist. |
