High school painting students were inspired by the simple images from the artist Jim Dine for this unit. He painted images from his childhood and past that had special meaning to him. His artwork shows many colors or variation, but is still very simple. Students chose a simple theme for their own artwork and used variation to show that theme in many different ways. We learned the principles of design: repetition, rhythm or movement, contrast, emphasis, balance and variety to create this artwork. Can you see the theme and variation shown in each unique mixed media work?

High school drawing students were challenged to create their own unique treehouse design. We looked at some creative designs from the Treehouse Masters show and brainstormed creative things to add to a treehouse. We worked with drawing boxes before starting the treehouse and then used 2 point perspective to make each treehouse part look realistic. Which tree house would you like to visit? In Drawing 2, we are working with lots of different art media. For the project below, the student used chalk pastel to make an interesting look for the background or negative space. We looked at the artist Jim Dine for inspiration with his use of simple personal objects and interesting color in the negative spaces. This next project had a focus no the contrast of celebrities and fame in modern society with medieval society. The material used is a clear scratch film. One half of the picture uses a modified image from a face card and the other half is a portrait of a modern celebrity. The student had to focus on the balance of dark and light as well as only scratching the areas that needed to be white. Can you tell which face card royalty and modern celebrity she chose?
In drawing class, students learned how to draw rounded objects using ellipses. Students put their learning into a creative drawing by making those objects come to life. We added value and some highlights of color to a few areas. Can you see the students' creativity? In Painting 3, we looked at how artists throughout history have portrayed animals in their art. Some artists drew and painted realistically, while others painted in a more stylized or simplified way. The 2 artists we looked at were Henri Rousseau and Franz Marc. The student chose the realistic style of painting and an owl as the animal subject matter.
Students in Painting class learned about the artist Gustav Klimt. Gustav Klimt created art in the Art Nouveau style later in his life and used lots of pattern & repetition in his paintings. He is also known for his use of gold in his work and themes of life and death. One of his most famous works is his painting titled Tree of Life. Students experimented with different watercolor techniques before creating their final work showing the theme life, death or life & death. Can you see which theme each student chose for their painting? |
