In Art Foundations II, we are working on the Principle of Design, Emphasis. With emphasis, you have something that stands out in your work. You can use placement, size and color to help show emphasis. For this project, we are partnering with New Life Primary School in Musac, Haiti to make portraits for students at the school. Here is a creative painted portrait using expressive color and emphasizing the face.

In painting class, we looked at some beautiful places that we would love to visit someday. Students found images of these inspiring places and turned one image into a painting. We also investigated the art and life of Friedrich Hundertwasser. He was an Austrian artist who created abstracted paintings with lots of repetition. Students used his style with layers of color, simplified forms and repetition when painting their inspiring places. We had a great visit with the artist, Danielle Clouse-Gast today. She showed us many of her paintings and studio. We even got to see her start a painting! Check out her work using the link above or visit her in Spirit Lake. She is one of the artists that will inspire our next painting! In painting class, we practiced working with our portrait to express who we are. Students did some work drawing and enlarging a unique photo of themselves. Then we looked at the Fauve artists and how they expressed emotion with color. They didn't use realistic colors. Students applied this expressive color use to their self portraits. Enjoy these creative paintings! In Art Foundations, we looked at Japanese paper art and how this art has lots of variety in papers used. We chose different handmade and colored papers to create our own paper artworks. Here is one student example using a variety of papers and expressing something meaningful about her life & experience traveling and meeting lots of new people.
