This unit focuses on the art element color. Color is what we see when light reflects off a surface. Students also learned about the style of art, Cubism, and researched some artists like Pablo Picasso, George Braque and Juan Gris. Cubism is an art style where shapes are broken apart, there is little real perspective and there can be many different views of an object. Students brainstormed air and sea creatures for the inspiration of the painting. Then they practiced different ways of breaking up the space and creature. Can you tell what sea creatures they chose? We also practiced and used color gradations to create this painting.

In Drawing 2, we experimented with different art media to make a creative background. After making the background, we worked on drawing a self-portrait using an interesting view. The portrait was then drawn on the background using charcoal.
High school drawing and painting students created special portraits for children in Peru. We learned about poverty and challenges people face in this country. You can learn about Peru at this website. Students in Art Foundations have been working with elements of art. They created a unique implied texture design using glaze and sgraffito techniques by scratching designs into the glaze. Here are the glazed designs. I will fire them in the kiln and the color with be glossy and more vibrant. Students are also working with color and learning how to mix and blend colors. Here is an example of a color wheel made by mixing the primary colors. Students also created a monochromatic value scale and mixed complementary value scale.
In the high school Drawing 2 and Painting 2 class, students are creating special portraits for children in Peru. Here is a link we investigated to learn about the country of Peru. Students are drawing or painting to create a realistic portrait for the child. Memory Project will deliver the portrait to the child in Peru this summer! Here are some finished portraits and works in progress. In Drawing 2, we compared modern celebrities with those from medieval times. We looked at images from medieval times and from modern celebrities. Our project was to combine a contemporary celebrity with a face card person- king, queen or jack. We worked with balance and contrast to create the drawing on the scratch board.
In 3D art class, students are working with clay to create for a purpose. Our first big project has been clay lanterns. Students worked with slabs and carving to create the unique lanterns. We learned that leather hard clay is best to carve and use when working with larger slabs. We will start using the wheel next week to create bowls, mugs, vases and cylinders. After the lantern is fired in the kiln, students will glaze it with color. Painting II students finished their Impressionism paintings. They learned that Impressionism artists usually painted outdoors, showed the light and color from that specific time of day, and showed their brush strokes on the paper or canvas. Each student chose their own landscape image to paint as an Impressionism painting.
In Art Foundations, the next element of art we have focused on is texture. Students created posters describing what texture is and how we see it as real or implied texture. Our first project with texture was a mosaic using real texture. Students found lots of different small pieces to create a picture. We discussed the different between representational and abstract art. Students chose to create a representational or abstract mosaic. Both chose an abstract design for this project.
