1st grade artists have been working with shapes to create art. We looked at the work of Wassily Kandinsky and his concentric circle painting. We used his circles as inspiration for the leaves on our trees. Students stamped the paper with a circle pop lid and then traced and cut out their hand as the tree. We used different circle shapes to trace and make the colorful fall leaves.

2nd graders are learning about influential artists. For this project, we are focusing on Walt Disney. Students loved learning about Walt Disney, his life and his dream of making a theme park. Walt Disney still inspires young people today with his creativity, passion, and dreams that did become a reality. Students designed their own creative and new theme park. Here are a few examples of works in progress. Here is an animation we watched in class to learn more about Walt Disney and his creative work. 3rd grade artists are focusing on nature for our first unit. Students created a nature book and practiced drawing different objects and animals from nature. Our current project is a clay loom that was created using the semi-circle shape. Students drew ideas of things from nature based on a semi-circle. Then, students chose an idea to create with clay. The clay looms have notches so that we can do a weaving with yarn after we paint it. This has been a really fun new project for the 3rd grade artists!
4th graders are learning how beliefs and values can be expressed through art. Students were able to look at Islamic religious art and see that it does not show people or objects; Islamic religious art is created using geometric or floral designs and patterns. Students drew a design that showed repetition with these patterns and shapes. Then students used neon oil pastels to trace over their lines. The last thing was adding watercolor paint to fill the space with color. These creative pieces will glow in the dark with a black light! Students are very excited about that!
5th graders are continuing with shapes to make creative designs. This time, students cut and flipped the shapes to create balance. They were working at cutting a variety of different shapes as well as complex and simple shapes. Students are gaining skill with using exacto knives to cut paper.
5th graders are starting a unit creating art with shapes, balance and contrast. They are seeing how they can be creative with their designs as well. To create this art, students folded a colored paper and drew a line from the top to the bottom. Then they cut it out to create a symmetrical design. The goal was to see if you could see something in both colors (positive and negative parts of the paper). What do you see? 4th graders are focusing on things that are important to them for this unit. We are learning that there are different beliefs and values in the world. Students will be creating art based on some of the different world religions, and they will create are that reflects their own beliefs and values.
3rd grade artists have been learning how nature is all around us and affects us. Nature includes all things that make up the physical world, plants, animals, etc. We looked at the photographer, Peter Lik, and how he travels everywhere to get the best nature shot. Students created a nature book to keep their drawings of nature things.
2nd grade artists are learning how they can make something strange, silly and different. We looked at Pablo Picasso and how he started drawing realistically, then made everything broken up (Cubist) or moved the parts of the face to different places. He made quite a stir in the art world. Students are making their Picasso inspired faces using clay.
In 1st grade art, we read the book, The Dot, and learned that we all can be artists. Students painted their own dots using watercolor paint. It was an awesome 1st day of 1st grade art! We also are learning about shapes and how we can use shapes to create art. Students created shapes using pop bottle lids and stamping them on paper. This was also a really fun day!
