Kindergartners finished their beautiful butterfly today! We read Eric Carle's book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar as inspiration for this spring-time project. At the end, the caterpillar becomes a beautiful, colorful butterfly. For this project, we learned how to make a slab, coil and spheres of clay. Students pounded their clay into a texture plate and then traced the shape of a butterfly. Then students rolled a coil for the body. They also rolled up 2 balls of clay as spheres for the eyes. Today we colored the butterflies using crayons and tempera paint cakes (like watercolor paint).

1st graders have been working with masks. They have created celebration masks. Now, we have been looking at African masks and the specific design and shape that is used in those masks. Students worked with clay to make the mask shape. They also added pieces or clay and carved into the mask to make the unique design.
2nd graders are working with a new process of printing: relief printing. Students drew their own design on foam to practice with the ink and brayer to make a print. Students found out how to make a good print using enough ink and rubbing well on the back to get the colored ink on the paper. We are also going to print with complementary colors. Students have been learning and using the primary colors in an artwork already. We will print with complementary ink on colored paper. Do you know the primary, secondary and complementary colors?
3rd graders have learned about Indonesian batik. We watched a video to learn how they design and make the colorful cloths. Students are using the wax from crayons to create their designs on cotton cloth. We will finish the drawing part and then place the cloth in colored dye. 4th graders were inspired by the artist Claire West to create landscapes. We learned about Claire West from the art teacher, Cassie Stephens. She posted a really great video showing how to create a landscape using chalk and liquid starch. Students created a sky and different parts of the land, thinking about the foreground, middle ground and background. Here are the works in progress. We will be adding painted trees, flowers and plants. The 5th graders are working on drawing and painting a famous artwork on the ceiling tiles in the art room. Students are in groups of 3 and chose from a group of famous artworks and artists. The students chose art by Andy Warhol and Romero Britto for the tiles. Here is some of the beginning progress.
