6th graders focused on Japan for 2 projects. We looked at some cultural information and could see how both traditional and modern things exist together in Japan. Students looked specifically at the Japanese Notan principle which has to do with balance and equal parts. We looked at the yin-yang symbol as an example of balance, equality and also opposites. Students created a collaborative paper-cut artwork cutting a variety of shapes into small colored square papers. We also discussed how many Asian cultures are more group-oriented and think first of the whole before the individuals. Students also made a simple artwork with organic lines and circles. We practiced blending oil pastels and using colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. These colors are analogous colors.
