8th graders learned how real artists work by starting a project focusing on inspiration and ideas. Students sketched ideas inspired by nature, food, everyday objects, music, etc. After that, student created a plan and final sketch of their idea. They really enjoyed working with clay to create a useful object. Some students created bowls, mugs, jars, and plates. It will be fun for these students to actually use their clay piece!

8th grade artists learned about the strange and bizarre style of art called Surrealism. We watched this video to learn about Surrealism and Salvador Dali. Then students created a human collage using the idea of juxtaposition: placing things next to each other that don't belong together. 8th graders have been working on a large drawing of a city corner with buildings using 2 point perspective. They learned how to start with the corner of the building and make both sides go to the vanishing points. 8th graders did some practice drawing in their sketchbooks before enlarging the drawing. Each student chose their own inspiration for the buildings and city background. We also tried something new by adding LED lights to the back of the artwork. Students learned how to make a simple circuit using copper tape, LED lights, electrical tape and a battery.
8th grade artists are learning how they can draw with linear perspective. Students are learning that using perspective makes things look 3D and more realistic. We started with 1 point perspective. Students learned how to draw simple shapes and make them into 3D forms using 1 vanishing point. Then, students chose their own word to design with 3D lettering and creative color. Here are the many different words and designs in 1 point perspective. 8th graders were inspired by Wayne Thiebaud's artwork and idea of using ordinary things in his paintings. We looked at Wayne Thiebaud's dessert paintings as inspiration. Students designed their own cupcake mug with some ordinary object in the frosting or on the handle. Can you tell what ordinary things inspired these 8th graders?
The 8th graders have been working on 2 different projects. They created their clay mugs and now have been painting a mandala. We learned that mandalas are connected with spirituality and meditation. We watched a video showing how monks make mandalas using colored sand. Students worked in groups to create a design using colored sand on the table. Students then created their own mandala design using numbers or letters. We traced and repeated the design around a cardboard circle and now students are finishing the painting part. 8th graders finished their creative building designs using a chosen theme as inspiration. 2 point perspective is different than 1 point perspective because there are 2 vanishing points, the corner of the 3D shape is closest to the viewer, and you start the drawing of a building with a line instead of a shape. The new class of 8th grade art students has chosen a fun variety of words for their 1 point perspective drawings. Students learned how to create a horizon line with one vanishing point and create shapes with edges that recede to the vanishing point. We were reminded that the 3D part of the shape is created using parallel lines, so our math knowledge is coming in handy! 8th graders were inspired by the artist Wayne Thiebaud to create their cupcake mugs. Wayne Thiebaud is an American artist known for his paintings of desserts, people and landscapes. He is best known for his dessert paintings. Students were inspired by his use of ordinary things in his artwork, specifically cupcakes! We enjoyed a day drawing and eating some cupcakes before creating our own mug inspired by cupcakes and ordinary things. Here are the creative works the students made and glazed! They are excited to drink from their creations! 8th graders have learned about the art style Surrealism. Characteristics of surrealism are: strange, bizarre, unusual, and dream-like. Students juxtaposed different magazine images to make their collage unreal. It was fun to see how you could use normal things in a strange and new way. |
