Jean Dubuffet was a French painter and sculptor who was born in 1901 and died in 1985.  He studied art early in life then changed and ran a winery for many years.  He came back to art at the age of 41. He was inspired by the art of children and insane people.  His art was considered Brut art or 'low art'.

Picture
Tour aux récits

Size:
406.4 x 188 x 188 in. (1032.3 x 477.5 x 477.5 cm.)
Location: London

This sculpture has many repeating organic shapes.  Most of the space is positive for the sculpture but there are a few shapes sticking out to create some interesting negative space. The overall shape and space is a big, tall rectangle.  This sculpture takes up space and you can walk all around it.

Paysage Logologique,
Size:49 x 84 x 77 cm. (19.3 x 33.1 x 30.3 in.)
Location: Opera Gallery

This sculpture has mostly organic shapes.  There are many smaller shapes.  This reminds me of the shape of a bench or bed.  The sculpture has some shapes that stick out and make a different negative space.  The sculpture has 3D parts that stick out and you can view it from all sides.

L'Aléatoire,
Size:99 x 59 x 33.5 cm. (39 x 23.2 x 13.2 in.)
Location: Paris

This sculpture has organic shapes and has them arranged to look like a human face and torso.  The main part is the positive space and it takes up a thin space from one side and wide and tall space from the front.  This is 3D because you can walk around it and it takes up a large space.

Similarities & influences of 2d work on 3d work

Jean Dubuffet's 2D artwork and 3D artwork are similar in that both use repeating shapes and lines.  There is lots of repetition in the apartment drawing as well as in his sculptures.  He also draws people very childlike.  His 3D sculptures also have a childlike look to them. They are mostly made with simple shapes and color.

Comparison with another sculptor

Picture
Alberto Giacometti
Man Pointing    1947
Picture
Jean Dubuffet
Le Dandy   1973/1982
A similarity between the 2 sculptures is that both are based on people.  Both of them seem tall.  They are both showing legs and feet.  Both of them are are abstract view of the human body, they are not realistic proportions or details of the body.
Some differences are that Giacometti's sculpture is all one color.  They are both made from different materials.  Giacometti's sculpture is much thinner and the surface looks rough.  Dubuffet's sculpture is more colorful and uses repeated shapes and patterns.  Dubuffet's sculpture is more childish and uses mostly organic shapes to make it look like a person.
Other interesting information about Jean Dubuffet:
He gave up painting for 8 years.
He finally focused again on art at the age of 41.
He experimented a lot with different materials and techniques.
He painted and made sculptures of everyday objects.
