In Art Foundations, we worked with the element of COLOR when creating our Cubist paintings. Students painted a color wheel first to remember how colors mix to make other colors. Then, students learned about the style of art called Cubism. In Cubist art, many objects are broken up, shown from different perspectives or simplified. Each student chose a sea or air creature for their painting. We practiced drawing them in the Cubist style. Can you guess each of the creatures?

Drawing students have been working with charcoal. We practiced with the different types, vine, compressed and charcoal pencils. Students did a practice drawing with fabric and then chose an animal head for their final charcoal drawing. Here are the finished drawings! Students are working with the element, FORM. We discussed how something with form is 3D, takes up space and has volume, and can be viewed from multiple angles. Students each came up with their own creative monster design. We built the monsters using 2 pinch pots. Next week we will glaze the monsters with fun colors!
Painting II students have been learning how they can express personal experiences or messages with their artwork. We looked at artwork by Ben Shahn, Lee Rainboth and James Nachtway. Each artist expresses meaning and important life experience/social issues or injustices in their artwork. Students sketched and brainstormed different ideas before starting the painting. Each student is expressing a message through their painting. Here are the final artworks! Painting I students are learning how they can express themselves with a self-portrait. We discussed how our culture and location is a big part of our identity. We had a guest visitor who talked about her culture and how women live in the Congo, Africa. Thank you Lydia! Each student did some research on different countries and traditional clothing from those countries. We did practice drawing portraits and now the students are working on the painting--combining their self-portrait with traditional clothing from another culture. Here are some of the paintings in progress.
Each student did some practice with different value techniques. Students chose their own subject matter to draw on a smaller paper and used some of the different techniques to fill in the value. This work took some time and patience, but was well worth it! |
